[In code] (2012)

Under the audience’s dissecting gaze, two dancers carrying out a set of tasks and subjective operations are eclipsed by the invasion of artificial organisms.

[In code] embodies principles of mind-and-body practices as a conducting thread for dance and digital visualization. The piece is a 45 minutes dance and media performance involving two dancers to be presented in multi-functional theatres. Audience members sit on either side of the performance space. The seating is several meters high, allowing a bird’s-eye view of the action.

In [In code], human beings are covered over by non-organic beings as natural life gives way to artificial life. These virtual organisms, or digital agents, are created from the pure material used to present digital information: the pixel. Graphic entities endowed with their own genetic behavioural code, these agents come into being through a generative visualization process inspired by artificial intelligence. For the choreographic research, we collaborated with specialists in two recognized somatic practices, Alexander Technique and Body-Mind Centering. Our objective was to define a set of performative instructions incorporating certain somatic principles and place them in relation within a coded, autonomous digital environment. We initiated this creation with the aim of exploring physical and digital performance from a new angle: that of the relationship between natural and artificial life and the transformation of our view of the body in that perspective. We deliberately expose spectators to sustained duration and surprising sensorial stimulation. They are brought to reflect and to self-observe their way of looking at things. If they give themselves up to the experience, they see feelings becoming thoughts, the act of perceiving becoming an act of intelligence, and the process of seeing being transformed into a creative act.
