the puppet (2005)

the puppet is a two hour performance / installation with two performers. This work is the first part of a trilogy centered on the idea that the body is an interface between the spectators and the media environment.

The activation of sensors, distributed on the costumes of the performers and in the installation give the visitors access to an interactive media environment. The notions of proximity and touch and the relationship between public and private space are the central issues of that piece.

In what state of mind must the performers place themselves to encourage the spectators to enter into relation with them? How does one organize artistic material in a format of mixed temporality (hybrid between performance and installation)? What is the technological framework of the work and up to what point does it determine the content?

The control of certain parameters of the media environment (sound, image, light) contributes to define the aesthetic of the work. The spectators, who have the power to modify some of these parameters, undertake some of the artistic responsibility. Starting from a partially predetermined framework, the participants have to make their choices, all in a structured environment of improvisation. The experience of the puppet aims to generate a sometimes contemplative, sometimes participative state in the spectator. The relationship developed between the spectators and the dancers is one of the important elements of the work. This relationship fluctuates between dialogue, confrontation, collaboration, domination and play.
