M.A.P.S.
Media And Performance Salon
M.A.P.S. is a laboratory of exchange for artists who work on the hybridization between live arts and media arts. A series of salons with the duration of two days each will take place between 2010 and 2012. Research residencies are also offered to selected artists.
M.A.P.S. is designed as an artistic act, a free space behind closed doors, without pressure. An intimate space, closed-off, exempt from the constraints of productivity and evaluation that constantly shape our relations. A place outside of time, where the dialogue takes multiple forms, between performance, practical laboratory or simple conversation. No public presentation concludes the meeting. The exchanges of information are, however, hyper-documented, recorded in as many ways as there are formats used: multiple cameras, sound recordings, archiving of outlines and sketches. The collected material is not the subject of an immediate documentary project. It contributes to a pool of archives that may eventually be transformed into a documentary, or serve as the subject for writings. Artists in residency who wish to realize the presentation of a work in progress are welcome to do so.
Engineers, theoreticians and artists will be invited. The initiative of Martin Kusch, Marie-Claude Poulin (kondtion pluriel) and Tom Fürstner, M.A.P.S. is located in Berlin, in a 2000 square-foot space, equipped with an on-site media setup.
For us, M.A.P.S. is an act of resistance against that which divides and isolates us, that which puts us into competition with one another. We crave the creation of a real space of freedom and discussion, for the progress of our research ideas and art. We want to enrich our practice and contribute to enriching that of others. We want to converse with people who have the background for understanding our questions and difficulties, those who can possibly lead us to new viewpoints on our projects and inventions, and stimulate us for the continuation of our approach.
