passage is the second part of a trilogy on the body as an interface. In offering the body of a performer and her environment as the ground for exploration, the work questions the notion of exchange and the boundary between beings and their environment.
During the three opening hours of the installation, the performer Catherine Tardif is posted inside the theatre. The visitor enters an intimate space, where he finds himself face to face with the performer, and from which he can enter and exit at his will. The work involves a scenography composed of different projection surfaces and objects the visitor can manipulate. The arrangement of the space creates a lively and enveloping atmosphere. Mobile projections cover the architecture of the space. In them, the visitor can distinguish between animated, figurative and non-figurative forms, transforming before his eyes.
The performer is equipped with a costume incorporating several sensors that react to proximity, touch and pressure. Through her costume, her body becomes an interface. By approaching or retreating from her, and even by touching specific parts of her body, the spectator sets off elements of the media environment that in turn influence the dancer’s movement. Alternating between very different performative states, the performer draws from a bank of behaviors and choreographic sequences.
By playing with the contrasts between solicitation and retraction, passage deals with playfulness and mutuality. The spectator’s capacities for listening and observation, as well as that for communicating and collaborating with other visitors and the performers, are the determining ingredients of the piece.
